Gene Bunnell, PhD, AICP shared his presentation called “People, Places, and Signs” for our May luncheon at Albany’s University Club to nearly 20 members and guests. Dr. Bunnell is a Professor Emeritus at UAlbany in the Department of Geography and Planning.
Dr. Bunnell’s lighthearted look at signs that he has come across during his travels show the creative and interesting side of signs we see each day. He presented signs that are iconic, funny, and sometimes odd. He also talk about some of the challenges that signs present. Finally, he provided some take-away lessons for professional planners, including the use of signs to reinforce the sense of identity and place. Signs can be managed with policies which encourage creativity without compromising community values.
You can see more of Dr. Bunnell’s work in his book which is linked in our online bookstore.
